Sport fishing in Costa Rica

Sport fishing in Costa Rica is a very diverse, challenging and fun venture.  Costa Rica’s Pacific and Caribbean coasts offer anglers one of the best deep sea sport fishing in the world.  Traveling sport fishing aficionados in Costa Rica have many options on what species to target, where to go, where to stay and many other important considerable variables.

Since most of Costa Rica’s sport fishing companies and tour groups follow a rigorous ‘catch and release’ policy, the great variety of fish off the coast is outstanding.  Another advantage of sport fishing in Costa Rica is the easy access to both coasts from the capital city of San José – with just 30 minutes of flying time to get to either the Caribbean or Pacific shores.  

The Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica is one of the best places on Earth when it comes to fishing.  Just 30 miles north of the Panamanian border, its unique location between the Pacific Ocean and the Dulce Gulf, allows anglers to have an excellent sport fishing experience.
The combination of cobalt blue waters just offshore in the Pacific and the mineral rich waters of the Dulce Gulf, causes a great food source of bait in the area.  As a result, species such as marlin, sails, dorado, wahoo, tuna, roosterfish, tarpon and snook can be caught year-round. 

Other popular fishing destination in Costa Rica offering great catches from May to September is the Papagayo Gulf – Tamarindo, Flamingo, Coco Beach and Carrillo Beach.  Sport fishing in the Caribbean is mostly limited to Tortuguero and Barra del Colorado.
