Safety should always be in the back of your mind, which is a reason that you should never be surfing alone. You never know what might go wrong even on the smallest of waves - its good to have someone who can help you out should you get into trouble.

One final little thing, as with swimming you should never go surfing straight after a meal. Give it at least half an hour before eating before going for a surf. If you are up for a surf first thing in the morning you should wait until after for your breakfast. Well, if that has not put you off costa rica surfing then lets get going with the things to know section.

Check out the Surfing Equipment for Beginners page to find out what surfboard and other equipment you'll need to start you off. It is also a good idea to have a look at the things to beware of when surfing so you don't hurt yourself, anyone else or annoy everyone else on the beach.

Point breaks, beach breaks, perfect lefts and rights, reefs and river mouths, warm water and waves year round make is what defines Costa Rica surfing and has but Costa Rica on the surfers map. Some beaches may be hard to get to but are totally uncrowded, although they are getting harder to find, and even the easily accessible ones tend to be much less crowded than the beaches of Hawaii, Southern California, and Sydney.

Costa Rica surfing can get very good and sometimes the size can be huge. Some breaks, namely Pavones, have some of the longest rides in the world and is definitely worth the long trek to get there.

Most surfers bring multiple boards, however I would warn do not limit your mobility by bringing too many boards. Getting around can sometimes be quite a challenge with a lot of luggage. If something does happen to your board, either on the flight or while you are in costa rica surfing, there are quite a few people or shops willing to fix your board for a price. Some of the popular towns, like Tamarindo have some pretty large surf shops with all the amenities that you find at home.
