Cabecera de la provincia de Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Surgió en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII con el nombre de pueblo de Guanacaste, como consecuencia del establecimiento de una ayuda de parroquia en su emplazamiento, aunque sin acto jurídico de fundación. En julio de 1824 sus vecinos declinaron la invitación del gobierno de Costa Rica para unirse a ese país, pero pasó a formar parte de él en 1826, debido a una ley del Congreso federal de Centroamérica, que agregó a Costa Rica todo el territorio del antiguo Partido de Nicoya.
En 1836 recibió el título de ciudad y en 1854 cambió su nombre por el de Liberia.
Liberia se encuentra aproximadamente a 4 horas de la capital de Costa Rica. Se le suele llamar "La Ciudad Blanca" porque en el pasado sus calles estaban hechas de "cascajo", un material polvoso de color blancusco.
Últimamente el turismo se da mucho en ésta zona, la cual posee un aeropuerto que recibe diariamente vuelos internacionales: Aeropuerto Daniel Oduber, por lo que es muy común ver a extranjeros caminando por los alrededores de la ciudad.
Es una ciudad muy tranquila con mucho folklore y lindas costumbres. La gente es muy amable y el clima bastante caliente, hasta 38 grados centígrados en la época de verano.
Uno de los principales atractivos de la zona es la cercanía a las playas y los numerosos hoteles que se encuentran en éstas. Lugares como el Golfo de Papagayo se han visto muy desarrollados en los últimos años y el crecimiento continúa.
Con la llegada de más vuelos internacionales a la zona el turismo se perfila como el mayor aliado para el desarrollo de la ciudad de Liberia.
Algunas de las aerolíneas que diariamente vuelan hasta Liberia son: American Airlines, Continental, Delta. Grupo Taca ya tiene ya tienen los permisos respectivos del ICT por lo que pronto se puede sumar a la lista de aerolíneas que llegan hasta la ciudad.
El Aeropuerto Daniel Oduber recibe un promedio de 38 vuelos semanales, con un promedio de 1.118 pasajeros por día. Solo en enero de del año 2005 mas de 32 mil turistas ingresaron a la ciudad de Liberia por este aeropuerto.
