The Site
The award-winning Intel site in Costa Rica, open since March 1998, is located in the province of Heredia, just 12 miles (19 kilometers) west of the capital of San Jose, a bustling metropolis of one million people. Costa Rica was originally selected for its export-oriented infrastructure, reliable power and advanced telecommunications, as well as its talented and educated workforce, high literacy rate (95.5 percent) and supportive business environment.
A significant amount of Intel's major manufacturing and technology development happens in Costa Rica. The facilities in Heredia sit upon 126 acres and include two manufacturing plants and one distribution center dedicated to the assembly, testing and distribution of the world's fastest processors: the Intel® Pentium® 4 processor, Intel® Celeron® processor and Intel® Xeon™ processor.
Intel Costa Rica is home to Latin America Engineering Services, a technology development group that includes: Latin America Design Services, which focuses on component design, Latin America Software Services, which concentrates on software development, and the New Business Initiative, which works to attract new business.
There are cafeterias, sports courts and walking trails for Intel Costa Rica employees to enjoy. It's also home to Intel's Solidarity Association of Employees of Costa Rica (ASINTEL) that since 1998 has offered quality services and products, from life insurance to emergency assistance loans, that contribute to the development of employees and their families.
Intel Costa Rica is the two-time winner of a community service award given by the Costa Rican-American Chamber of Commerce, and as of April 2002, it's also home to a new Intel® Computer Clubhouse after-school program. While high-quality coffee beans, bananas and textiles have historically been chief exports for Costa Rica, the current chief export is computer chips, thanks to Intel's presence, which has initiated much economic growth.
