International flights arrive at San Jose Juan Santamaria international airport, and though the airport in Liberia, 217km (135mi) northwest of San Jose has been upgraded and now operates as a second-string international airport.
There are two domestic airlines: Sansa and NatureAir. Demand for seats is high, so try to book as far in advance as possible. The majority of Costa Ricans do not own cars, so public transportation is quite well developed, although connections between towns other than San Jose are limited. Most multi-destination trips will require backtracking into San Jose and then catching another bus outward again.
Sansa operates from San Jose Juan Santamaria International Airport, while Nature Air operates from Tobias Bolanos International Airport in Pavas, 6.4km (4 miles) from San Jose The ride from downtown to Pavas takes about 10 minutes.

LIBERIA, Costa Rica (Contributed by Venus)"January 2004 - My boyfriend and I were staying in Costa Rica for a week at this really nice resort, so we only passed through the airport. I wouldn't advise anyone to consider sleeping in the Liberia airport. Overall it was a neat experience because it's all open up, yup no walls. It's funny because when you are waiting for your plane the terminal is full, but when you get on you can look out your window and see that there is nobody there. There's only enough room in the waiting area to fill one plane and while you wait you can see them filling it up and getting it ready for boarding. You walk right out on to the tarmack (you're pretty much in one big field) and up the steps into the plane. The seats are hard bucket plastic type with no armrests, whoopteedoo. Other then the area where you wait to depart and the very small snack bar upstairs (capacity is probaby 10 people) there are no other seats. I'm not too sure that there's a big security presence. Even if there was I'd be afraid that they'd do more harm then good. You can't really buy any food here either. There's a small snack bar upstairs and one downstairs. You can only access one at a time, either if your arriving or departing and the only one with any real food is the upstairs snack bar for when you arrive. The bathrooms remind you of a jail (as there are bars on the windows and it's completely painted white) and I (being a female) was a bit afraid to walk by myself down the hall to use them. Really, I don't think this place is made to accomodate any overnight guests. If you're travelling to Liberia (while it's a really neat site to see) you should have prearranged a hotel for you to sleep in when you arrive or before you depart." Added 10 Jun 04
