The community of Santa Elena borders the Monteverde Conservation area in the Cordillera de Tilarán of Central Costa Rica. Within this region of pristine cloud forest, three hundred and ten hectares ( seven hundred and sixty five acres) have been permanently leased by the administration of the Santa Elena community High School of Monteverde. The original vision was to use this land for agricultural research and education in Monteverde.
For a variety of reasons, however, the farming proved to be unsuccessful. In 1989, it was decided to convert the land into a cloud forest reserve. Together with Youth Challenge International, a Canadian based non-profit organization, the community established an eco-tourism reserve, which officially opened on March 1, 1992.The reserve was created out of a community's determination to help preserve the unique cloud forest surrounding them and to use tourism as a tool to benefit community development in Monteverde. Entrance fees are used for the protection and management of the Reserve and to provide higher quality education for schools of Monteverde

Monteverde, Costa Rica
This eight week summer course of study is designed to offer students the opportunity to live and work on ecological and social projects in a rural, but rapidly developing region in Costa Rica. This is a multi-disciplinary program designed for students from various disciplines, including architecture, planning, landscape architecture, resource mangament, and international development. Students participate in a seminar on sustainable development, enroll in Spanish language classes, and take an intensive 7-credit studio/internship with on eof the many organizations in the Monteverde zone working toward sustainability. There is a final report, plans or design scheme, or actual environment intervention, depending on the nature of the work. In addition, there is a series of lectures and field trips to local cooperatives, ecologically managed farms, and various forest reserves.
This is a semester's worth of credits (13) in a small rural community next to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve in Costa Rica. Students work with community residents on various projects jointly defined. Program is sponsored jointly by UB and the University of Maryland Landscape Architecture Program. Fluency in Spanish is encouraged but not required.
Monteverde is well-known for its Cloud Forest reserves and prolific birdlife. This very rural, rustic area is perfect for hard-core birdwatchers. Monteverde has grown in popularity because there are few places on Earth with this kind of rainforest still intact. Proper planning is key for a visit to Monteverde. You must have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, because ALL roads in and out of Monteverde are terrible. If vacation time is limited, only dedicated hikers and birdwatchers should consider Monteverde.
