Casual atmosphere, cold beer and great waves...
nosara costa ricaNormally in Nosara when a community meeting is scheduled, maybe 5 - 6 people show up; 1 hour late. Not this time.
Approximately 300 people attended the meeting in Rancho Tico on Sept. 16, 2004, regarding the construction of the new gas station located in front of the Materiales de Constr. Nosara and adjacent to the Sube y Baja Creek.
No microphone, no public address system, hardly any light. The bar is open, nobody in charge of the meeting. No hope of hearing anyone speak, unless it's a drunk yelling at the bar for another beer.
Incomprehensible plans, diagrams, propaganda, bureaucrat-speak acronyms and legalese. Hundreds of local men and women and children, waiting for the public meeting to begin, waiting for something to make sense. A few white faces in strategic spots, armed with briefcases, smiling confidently.
A half-dozen rich, retired Americanos, who live at the beach in modern multistory mansions, want the new gas station torn down. Hundreds of local Ticos turned out to protest - to demand that construction of the new station be completed, so their village can grow and prosper and function like a modern town.
They were herded into a pen and kept waiting an hour, with nothing to do but drink beer or refuse to drink beer and wonder how long this humiliating, pointless "public meeting" was going to take?
