Rincon de la Vieja National Park

National Parks

The Rincón de La Vieja National Park has an extension of 14.083.9 hectares. It is divided in two stations: Santa Maria station and Pailas station.

The solid Rincón de La Vieja Volcano, with 1.916 meters of altitude, is a compound structure. Nine eruptive points have been identified at the top of the volcano, one active and the others inactive in degradation process. To the south of the crater you will find a pure water lagoon. This volcano has multiple fumaroles and warm hot springs. This park was created in 1973 to protect 32 rivers. It has had volcanic activity since 1960 and had a recent condensation and lash in 1997.

Today, the volcano is calmly active but it is not dangerous. This park is also the native place of the national flower, the Guaria Morada (cattleya skinneri). The Flora is typical of the Atlantic, with forest towers overhead with trees up to 40 meters high. Biological studies have identified 257 species of birds, including the three-wattled bellbird, which was named for its loud and strange metallic call. This place is also known for its hot therapeutic springs, and outside this park there are many lodges that provide tours and transportation throughout the region.
