Costa Rica enjoys a tropical climate throughout the year, but weather varies by region, elevation, and season. Despite its small size, the country offers sunny beaches, cool mountain towns, misty cloud forests, and lush rainforests, making it a destination that can be visited in every season.
Instead of four traditional seasons, Costa Rica has two main seasons. The dry season generally runs from December through April and is characterized by sunny days, especially along the Pacific Coast. The green season, from May through November, brings refreshing afternoon showers that nourish forests, rivers, and waterfalls. Mornings are often sunny, making this an excellent time for sightseeing and outdoor adventures.
The Pacific Coast experiences pronounced dry and rainy seasons. The Caribbean Coast receives rainfall throughout the year, with relatively drier months often occurring in September and October. The Central Valley enjoys spring-like temperatures year-round due to its higher elevation, while mountain regions such as Monteverde and Cerro de la Muerte are cooler and frequently covered in mist.
Every season offers unique experiences. The dry season is ideal for beaches, hiking, and family vacations. The green season offers fewer crowds, vibrant landscapes, excellent wildlife viewing, and lower travel prices. Turtle nesting, whale watching, birding, and rainforest photography are often best during the rainy months.
Lightweight clothing is suitable for most destinations, while a light rain jacket is recommended year-round. Visitors traveling to volcanoes, cloud forests, or highland regions should also bring a sweater or light jacket, as temperatures can be significantly cooler.
Whether you’re exploring tropical beaches, hiking volcanoes, rafting wild rivers, or relaxing in the cloud forests, Costa Rica’s diverse climate allows visitors to enjoy unforgettable experiences at any time of year. Its varied microclimates make every journey unique, offering something special in every region and every season.
