Drake Bay & Corcovado

Drake BayDrake Bay is one of the most peaceful and beautiful destinations in Costa Rica. Resting on the northern side of the Osa Peninsula in the Puntarenas province, Drake Bay is one of the most remote places in the entire country - a natural paradise for both adventure-seekers and eco-travelers alike.
The town, commonly referred to as simply Drake, is a tranquil village that offers easy access to Corcovado National Park – known for its natural beauty, diverse wildlife and unique ecology.  National Geographic has called it "the most biologically intense place on Earth".

Corcovado National Park conserves the largest primary forest on the American Pacific coastline and one of the few remaining areas of lowland tropical rainforests in the world.  It is widely considered the crown jewel in the extensive system of national parks and biological reserves throughout the country.  Corcovado National Park is open to the public and can be visited on day trips and for overnight visits.  One may camp or stay indoors at one of several ranger stations equipped with bunks.

Drake Bay offers some of the best opportunities in the world to see dolphins and whales and other marine life in their natural habitat.  Humpback Whales come here from both North and South America, making for some of the best whale watching to be found anywhere.  Over twenty five species of whales and dolphins either reside here or pass through the area on migration.

From Drake Bay you can also visit Isla del Caño Biological Reserve.  This reserve is located just 12 miles from the mainland, offering some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in Costa Rica.  Here visitors have the opportunity to swim among sea turtles, large schools of jack and needle fish and whitetip reef sharks.

Isla del Caño’s beaches are frequently visited by olive Ridley sea turtles, who venture ashore to lay their eggs on the sandy beaches. Just offshore, whales and dolphins can also be admired.  Canoeing and kayaking are available in the area as well as some excellent sport fishing off the coast.

For those who prefer to relax on a beach, the isolated shores of Playas Cocalito and San Josecito are just a short walk or boat ride away.

Getting to Drake Bay & Corcovado

Access to the bay is possible with the help of a dirt road from the town of Sierpe during the dry season; however, during rainy season the road leading to Drake can become impossible to pass.  For many, the best way to get to Drake is by boat, as the most memorable and scenic spots can only be reached this way.
Sierpe River taxis are the most common form of transportation and give vacationers a lift to the bay for an affordable price.
