Whales in Costa Rica: A Paradise for Whale Watching

Humpback whale breaching out of the deep blue ocean

Costa Rica is one of the best whale-watching destinations in the world, offering visitors the rare opportunity to observe these magnificent marine mammals in their natural habitat. Thanks to its unique location between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, the country welcomes several whale species throughout the year. In fact, Costa Rica enjoys one of the longest whale-watching seasons on the planet because humpback whales migrate from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres at different times.

Why Costa Rica Is Famous for Whale Watching

The warm tropical waters surrounding Costa Rica provide an ideal environment for whales to mate, give birth, and care for their calves. Unlike colder feeding grounds, these calm waters offer protection for newborn whales during their first weeks of life. This makes the country’s coastline an exceptional destination for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and nature lovers.

Every year, thousands of travelers visit Costa Rica hoping to witness the spectacular sight of humpback whales breaching, slapping their tails, or swimming gracefully alongside their young.

Humpback Whales: Costa Rica’s Most Famous Visitors

The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is the most commonly observed whale species in Costa Rica. These giants can grow up to 16 meters (52 feet) long and weigh as much as 40 tons.

Humpback whales are known for their incredible acrobatic displays. Visitors often witness them:

  • Breaching completely out of the water
  • Tail slapping on the ocean surface
  • Pectoral fin waving
  • Spyhopping, where the whale lifts its head above the water
  • Mothers swimming with newborn calves

Male humpback whales are also famous for producing complex songs that can travel for many kilometers underwater during the breeding season.
